Once upon a time, Beth started tweeting and Facebooking to raise money for orphans (Her two adopted children came from Cambodia orphanages). On her 50th birthday, she set a goal to get 50 people to donate $10. Over time, over multiple experiments, she got better than better. Now she teaches people who to use social media for social causes.

How does Beth’s success tie into a broader view of social media as a marketing discipline?

Social media is about reciprocity. People help you because:

  1. You’re famous (MC Hammer, Ashton Kutcher)
  2. You’re useful/interesting (Guy Kawasaki, Tim O’Reilly)
  3. You’re nice (people help you because you help others)

Beth has all three. Check out her blog at http://beth.typepad.com/
